Sydney

Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane the most popular destinations for domestic travellers

Australians staying at home paid more for their accommodation in 13 of the 20 most popular destinations, with 1 flat and 6 falling. In the country, domestic hotel guests paid 1% less.

Byron Bay was the highest priced destination, with the highest registered rise of 8% to $239, while Townsville was the best value, up 3% to $128.

The Whitsunday Islands was 2016’s highest priced destination but a fall in price of 9% saw it fall back into 3rd place behind Sydney.

There were still 15 destinations with averages below $200, Townsville being the lowest, followed by Launceston and Coffs Harbour.

The opening of several new hotels in Perth increased capacity, which helped trigger a 8% decrease in average prices in 2017.

Gold Coast

International guests paid 3% less to stay in Australia than 2016 but in the op 20 destinations, averages fell in 7, were flat in 2 and rose in 11.

A very successful Australia-China Year of Tourism in 2017 meant that Chinese arrivals were up 12%, overtaking New Zealand as the largest source market.

The Gold Coast area is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games in April 2018 when it’s expected 100,000 visitors will descend. In 2017 though, its average was up just $2 a night.

There were 15 destinations in the Top 20 with averages of less than $200. Townsville achieved the best value, even though the Queensland city saw a price rise of 11%, the highest in the Top 20.

The Whitsunday Islands recorded the biggest fall in price of 14%, but it still remained one of the highest priced places to overnight.
