Finland Domestic and Inbound travel: Excellent value across the country despite 4% average price rise

Whether you were a domestic Finnish traveller or an overseas guest headed towards the Nordic land of stunning scenic delights and contrasts, 2016 saw all travellers to and around Finland facing a 4% rise on average in hotel prices across the country. Fortunately, given that all of the top 10 most popular destinations in Finland represented excellent value to start with, the average price hike didn’t detract too much from their appeal. For domestic travellers, all of the top 10 destinations offered rates between 102-118 Euros per night. Inbound travellers ended up paying a little more for accommodation in places like Kittili, Rovaniemi and the capital, Helsinki, but overall they only paid a mere 2 Euros more on average.

“Finland provides truly exceptional value for money to both its native citizens and its international guests, given that almost all of the most popular tourism hotspots across the country offer average prices that hover around the 100 Euros per night mark. This gives Finland’s holidaymakers and business travellers the chance to explore any part of the country that appeals to them, without being constrained by high accommodation prices.” – Isabelle Pinson, Vice President EMEA, Hotels.com brand

What international travellers paid in their top 10 Finnish destinations

  • The number of international travellers visiting Finland rose slightly in the first 11 months of the year and averages paid in the top 10 most popular Finnish destinations rose in eight and fell in two. In the country as a whole, overseas guests paid 4% more than in 2015 on average.
  • HPI data shows that International travellers in general pay more for their hotel rooms than local guests, and this was certainly true for Finland in 2016 but the difference was tiny at just two Euros per night. The difference can be attributed to exchange rate factors and the calibre and location of hotels that visitors tend to choose.
  • Amongst the top 10, Turku had the lowest average, in spite of a modest increase, while Kittila recorded the highest rate after only a slight rise.
  • The highest percentage fall was seen in Mariehamn, whereas Inari, Jyvaskyla and Vaasa saw the highest upticks.
  • Helsinki was the most popular destination, followed by Turku and Tampere.
